Letter: Don’t know they don’t know

The current state of Hazelmere Dam caused by the Dept. of Water Affairs is a really good follow up to the R38m pipeline installed two and-a-half years ago by Umgeni Water, on a river that could not provide the necessary water flow during the drought.

The dam is dangerous and the pipeline has been vandalised and was never completed. Unfortunately, the word maintenance does not feature in any of the SOE management’s vocabulary.

This type of work is endemic in South Africa as a friend of mine, now dead, would explain about the alleged decision makers: “They don’t know that they don’t know.”

Unfortunately, this is how our beautiful country is now run. They saw the white and Indian people do it, so they automatically think that they know how to do things. That is the main serious error of our government, employing people in positions where that have not got a clue as to the necessities of the employment position that they fill.

SAA is another glaring screw up. The staff want salary increases but there is no money. SAA has over 1000 too many staff members and is deep in debt to the taxpayer. For goodness sake, put it out of its misery and just close it down completely. I would repeat my friend’s favourite saying about the management: “They don’t know that they don’t know.”

This could be stated about most SOEs, including Eskom.
