The letter ‘#LeaveOurKidsAlone misses the mark’ (Letters, November 29) refers. I would like to provide from statistics from studies done after Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) was implemented in other countries and to inform people that this system does not benefit our children.
The letter stated: “I am not an expert in the field but I believe the experts when they say that sexuality education does not promote promiscuity; it promotes healthy, informed, and responsible behaviour”.
In Kenya, CSE was implemented in 2003.
The teenage pregnancy rate, five years prior to the implementation of CSE, was 18% of young women aged between 15 and 19. In 2018, five years after the implementation of CSE, the teenage pregnancy rate increased to 25%.
An increase in teenage pregnancy will have a negative impact for South Africa. As a nation we will have more teenage girls dropping out of school due to the stigma attached to teenager pregnancy, which could lead to depression and poverty.
The results from the report published by The Institute for Research and Evaluation titled: Re-Examining the Evidence for Comprehensive Sex Education in Schools: Part One: Research Findings in the United States, showed that of the 60 schools in the US, there was no evidence of the effectiveness of CSE to reduce teenage pregnancy or to reduce STD’s/STI’s.
CSE has not shown evidence of achieving its goal in countries where it has been implemented.
Are we, as South Africans, willing to put the lives of our children at risk by allowing government to implement a failed system?
