At a special Council sitting on December 3, the election of mayor for KwaDukuza Municipality once again failed to take place.
This is now the third attempt to elect a mayor for the municipality.
It defies belief that in the seven months since the previous mayor tendered his resignation, the ANC in the region cannot agree on a suitable candidate to lead the municipality.
Through the separation of powers in a municipality, council plays oversight over the mayor and is accountable to the community.
The mayor plays oversight on the municipal manager, who is accountable to Council, and the municipal manager plays his oversight role over the administration of the municipality and is accountable to the mayor.
It is not acceptable that divisions within the ruling party prevent council meeting from sitting which in turn affect decisions being made, and ultimately service delivery is affected.
