Letter: Apathy of the church

Ishara Baijnath of Umhlali writes:

On February 13 a nationwide march took place to oppose the comprehensive sexuality education curriculum that government intends implementing throughout all schools in the country.

The curriculum is currently being rolled out as a pilot project in 1500 schools.

A call was made to our community to join forces, add strength and to help make our voices heard against this agenda to distort the minds of young children with sexual perversion and sexually immoral ways that have been imposed by organisations who seek to propagate their own agenda.

The fight against CSE is a fight to protect our children and preserve their innocence.

Such a fight should be a cause that not only parents should engage in but also all those who subscribe to higher standards of moral and ethical values.

I commend those religious leaders and members who did pitch up at the march to lend support, however I was surprised and disappointed at the general lack of apathy of the church on such an urgent and important matter.

Is the church not concerned that government seeks to corrupt the minds of innocent children by sexualising innocent children in believing that they have rights to this at elementary levels of education?

The lack of support shown by the church in my opinion fails to become the voice for the voiceless, the church often takes the easy route out in that “we don’t interfere with government and government’s agendas”.

This passive state is what leads to the decay of morals in society.

Therefore, government will continue to infringe and impose their standards on society and yet again the church stays silent.

The church’s silence on this matter is of serious concern, most often the church succumbs to fear and intimidation and will refuse to confront government and finds contentment within a church building instead of “Gate keepers of the City”.

The church has failed this generation if they don’t teach them to demonstrate their faith and beliefs and to stand for a cause in spite of the cost.

We see this demonstrated all over scripture, yet the contemporary church today chooses to remain silent while evil prevails, settled in compromise! I pray the church in KwaDukuza will awaken before it’s too late.
