Letter: No apology from me

I need to comment on Carolyn Harris’ letter (Shame on Us, February 28).

I am tired of apologists and liberal minded people, hail the Trumps and Johnsons of this world, a spade is a spade nothing more, nothing less.

So, I am white but was in no way privileged under the past regime, being an English person there was no, ‘Wie is jou maatjie’ jobs or opportunities for me.

I had to work my butt off to get anywhere. From a very young age I was working to help support my family due to my late father being rather sickly, so hardship I know of plenty.

There were times we lived off the fruit that grew on the trees in our yards. I lived in 24 places before I was even 18, as good as a nomad as you can get, but no feeling sorry for myself.

I used to go into Soweto, Mamelodi, Tembisa and many other areas to sell chickens, eggs etc and trust me, there were people in those neighbourhoods living like kings, making a killing back then.

I was envious of their palatial residences, so not all was bad for everyone.

Yes, there were atrocities, for sure, no denying that, but you can’t right a wrong with another wrong.

Learn to move on and grow, something that the ruling party simply cannot do, constantly playing the race card and blaming the past.

The entitlement syndrome has led to an inept workforce, particularly in the public sector.

They rock up to collect a cheque month end, no desire or will to help and make the country better, no what can I do, only what can I get.

There is no apology for the trillions lost, stolen, plundered from our coffers, so shame on them, now people’s pensions are about to be ruined.

Everything the government touches fails, that has nothing to do with the past.

I will not accept responsibility for the state of the nation today, that is upon the ones who cannot see through the veil nor learn from most of Sub Saharan Africa, once thriving economies now in dire straits due to despots and those who simply could not gracefully step down accept that their time has come and gone.

There is one example that they could look towards – Israel a world power in 72 years, none of this feeling sorry for themselves, rising out of the ashes and turning desert into paradise against all odds and no expecting anyone else to do it for them.

What do we have? A wasted 25 years building private empires.

So, the answer is simple: the ANC has failed dismally and now it’s time for someone else to have a shot, people need to accept Apartheid is dead and will never return, no matter who is running the show.

Every vote will count so next elections make your mark and vote for change.
