Letter: Public drinking is wrong!

I am in total disagreement with my fellow black brothers, Manqoba Nqops and Sipho Mkhize.

Drinking in public is wrong wherever! In white neighbourhoods or in our own townships.

The problem lies with ourselves as black people. Within Nkobongo and surrounding townships you can just see the damage to infrastructure once people are drunk in public.

You can’t drive around normally – you have to constantly weave through the sea of glass bottles, and this happens each and every weekend.

Not to mention the social ills that come with excessive drinking in public with little children watching, who also end up in this endless cycle of alcohol abuse since they are the very ones who are sent to the bottle store to buy more.

Our people just cannot understand why drinking in public is so bad because this is what they do in our townships, getting drunk and playing loud music, not caring about their neighbours.

Then why do we expect them to care about neighbours on the beach?

Just last weekend a man got drunk and thought it was good to start driving around the township like a demented fool at high speeds (probably to impress his peanut brain friends) ended up crashing into a house opposite KwaCrestu Inkosi Church (kwaNoah).

So, drinking in public encourages people to start acting like idiots to impress the “public”, and discomforts others.

Thank God no one was watching television in the dining room at that very moment!

So, we must crack down on public drinking in townships, then people will stop at the beaches.
