In answer to Georgina Mitova-Sealby’s question in her letter (Do Zimbalians care? March 6), the short answer is yes, Zimbalians do care about the beach and every other aspect of the local environment.
Even though the 6km stretch of coastline in question falls within the jurisdiction of the local municipality, ZEMA has for many years felt morally obliged to maintain the beach and clear the litter directly in front of the Zimbali Estate.
ZEMA Environmental Manager Brendan Smith says, “Not only does ZEMA clean the public beach daily, but we have also adopted the public M4 verge and traffic islands adjacent to Zimbali where we remove litter, plant the verges with indigenous plant species and maintain them on an ongoing basis”.
ZEMA has dedicated a staff member specifically to assist the local municipality by “cleaning-up” every morning to remove most of the litter.
In this instance your reader may have noticed that the state of the beach was less pristine than usual because of recent heavy rains and a variance of sea levels due to both the weather and tidal movements.
