In view of statistics in South Africa, it is evident that gender-based violence is a pandemic.
More that 10 000 rapes reported as of April 1 to June 31, 2021, an increase of 4 201.
The breakdown is: 3 766 rapes occurred at the victim’s home, 487 domestic violence-related and 915 rapes attributed to alcohol intoxication.
Note, it does not matter what she did, it is never okay to rape a woman.
Rape is a human rights violation no matter the context.
South African legislation needs to change, lawmakers need to be proactive and not procrastinate in implementing stringent measures to ensure the safety of women and children.
We petition government and the Constitutional Court to review the law on GBV.
We propose no bail for rape suspects, mandatory DNA testing, GBV task teams at each police station and that offenders be sentenced to a minimum of 25 years to life imprisonment.
To eradicate the misuse of the justice system, any false case or information provided, the alleged perpetrators should be fined or given a criminal record.
A GBV register of perpetrators should be made available.
Perpetrators registered should at all times be monitored.
Rape is not a mistake, it’s an individual/s choice of action.
