Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan writes:
We tend to think of death and beauty as incompatible.
The Umhlali cemetery (Cemetery is disrepair, Courier November 5) is one of the oldest cemeteries in our area.
Home to a once magnificent MOTH memorial, some of the graves date back to the 1850s and provide a glimpse into the rich history of Umhlali.
Over the last few years the area has become a haven for vagrants.
Through my formal requests over the last year, KDM Community Services have committed to repairing the fence and KDM parks and gardens have also committed to the maintenance of green spaces remains on their monthly operational schedule
Certainly, much is needed in order to restore this iconic site to its former glory, and we look forward to an aligned effort by the responsible departments.
