#Letters: The importance of conserving the village feel

"Something has shifted in the way we Mdlotians treat and great each other in our public spaces'' - Brian Gibson.

Brian Gibson of Umdloti writes:

Jacqui Herbst’s “No Sugar Added” column (North Coast Courier, March 1) refers.

This is a message about conservation. Not about fauna and flora, important as it may be, but rather about the growth of that unique species, “homo sapiens umdlotius”.

A long-standing resident and I were chatting recently. We agreed that something has shifted in the way we Umdlotians treat and greet each other (and our visitors) in our public spaces.

Heaven knows, we have a right to be a bit grumpy after all our trials and tribulations. But are we losing the special village feel? It’s worth conserving!

We need, through our behaviour, to reinforce the message and perception that we are a resilient, cheerful, relaxed, and optimistic community with a bright future.

It starts with our attitude towards each other, and others, in our day-to-day exchanges. It starts early in the morning with an eye-to-eye greeting or a wave of the hand on the promenade.
