#Letter: Residents left in the lurch over overtime restrictions

Councillor believes 16-hour power outage could have been avoided.

On Wednesday, April 3, Palm Lakes residents experienced a 16-hour power outage.

It was reported to the municipal control room, and a reference number was allocated.

After a few hours, when residents followed up on progress of repairing the fault, they were told it would only be dealt with the following day due to the overtime hours having been reached.

This extended inconvenience could have been avoided if KwaDukuza municipality had taken heed of the repeated advice from the Democratic Alliance to ensure that critical service delivery posts are filled by suitably qualified staff.

In addition, the DA has also been calling for the shift system to be implemented to curtail the ballooning overtime costs.

We have written to the electrical department to request feedback on this delay, and to establish from them how they plan to address the shortcomings in the department to ensure that faults are addressed with a minimum of disruption to the lives of the residents of KwaDukuza.

The Democratic Alliance has workable solutions that address the critical issues that South Africans have to put up with and ensure capable public service.
