North Coast residents vent about trash and doggie poo

Readers speak their mind about litter bugs and careless dog owners.

The prisine beaches of the North Coast are our primary attraction to ensure a vibrant tourist economy.

We asked our readers how the community could better deal with beach litter and dog poo.

They responded with some great suggestions on how to make our beaches more welcoming for everyone.

Reh Ana – Cameras, beach patrol, law enforcement, fines, take a pic of the guilty dog owners and place it prominently along the promenade under a Doofus Dog Owner notice board, publish this list weekly in your local newspaper.

Jenny Doonan Mollenzie – People should bring their OWN poop bags. Tie it to their collars if you too lazy to carry it.

Meg Frizelle – Provide doggy bags?

Irene McAlpine – You got a dog, you pick up the poo, and don’t just cover it in the sand.

Melissa Leigh – Would be nice to have patrols that can issue spot fines for litter and for dog mess left unattended.

Michael Gahagan – Please understand that we have amazing people in our Ballito community working on cleaning up our beaches every single day of the month.
There are so many reasons why these projects only start a process that begins in your own house.
Come and join us this Sunday, 24 November at 7am, on Zimbali Long Beach starting at the parking lot on Foch Le Roux Road and not just learn more about what you can do in your home, but make a very small difference by collecting plastic and other human distributed debris off our beaches. We hope to see you there!

Ella Horswell – There should be more policing with fines for littering – dog litter and human litter as well. I am a dog owner and I love walking my dogs on the promenade and pick up after them. I’d hate to have that taken away because people are so disrespectful and don’t respect this public space.

Ria Lawrence – Wish I knew because it was always such a pleasure walking on the promenade as it was nice and clean. These days it looks like a dog toilet. If you say keep the dogs off the beach then all the dog owners will attack you again. I know it’s not all the dog owners but if they could just clean after their dogs. We’ve seen people’s dogs poo on the beach and only when the owners see us looking at them then they make a plan to pick it up. It’s disgusting.

Leigh Scott Whyte – Pick up your dogs business. It’s the right thing to do.

Jayanthi Laldas – Provide more bins in the area, put signages to create awareness. As for the dogs, it’s up to owner to clean the dogs poo.

Sandy Coughlan – People are no longer considerate anymore.

Bk Maqhuzu Ngwenya – Keep dogs away.

Amelia Buchler Kotze – Don’t just cover the dog poo in the sand, I have seen people do that!

Brendan Smith – Just simply pick up three pieces of trash every time you visit the beach. Or better yet, join a beach clean up.

Xandra Galhardo – People have to understand, when they walk dogs on the promenade and the beach, they have to bring the plastic bags to pick up the poop. All the beaches have a box for the dogs poop to be dropped. The problem is not the dogs, the problem is the owners.

Ashwin Maharaj – Dogs are a minor issue. Humans are the real problem.
