#Opinion: Are North Coast roads more dangerous than elsewhere in SA?

Residents weigh in on local drivers, potholes and unrepaired infrastructure.

We recently asked our Facebook audience, “For those who have lived in other parts of SA – how do you rate the quality of driving on North Coast roads?”.

Read a selection of the responses below.

Joni Pires – Someone is always chasing the Hiluxes, Fortuners and Rangers for some reason. Slow down bra.

Des-Marié Victor – I think the fact that there are only 4 robots and at each of them, there is a run over light, tells it all. But the best people live here.

Joy Ramkumar – Our roads have become a Formula 1 racing circuit for taxi drivers, only difference… they make pit stops anywhere and everywhere.

Delene Albertyn – Personally, I found the quality of the roads and speed of repairs to potholes better than Gauteng. However, now that I live in Cape Town I realize the speed people drive at in KZN is probably the worst.

Heather Rudolph – Coming from Circle City, the peeps here don’t know how to navigate the circle.

Donna Stevenson – There is a definite need to enforce rules. I always seem to be behind black cars with no numberplates. How is it possible for so many vehicles in Ballito to have no numberplate?

Val van der Linde – The roads are not coping with all the traffic. Ballito has grown so much with developments everywhere, but no expansion for the roads, still only one road in and out of Ballito. Traffic is horrendous at the moment.

Eileen Drysdale – Terrible – speeding, recklessness and general disregard for fellow road users. I thought Gauteng was bad – these roads are death traps.

Clint Evrard – I really think they need to fix the roads, they definitely need some tar, especially on roads that are more frequently used, potholes obviously the issue.

Christy Dennis van Deventer – Sheffield beach is full of potholes around Elaleni and Zululami and the intersection by Tiffany’s and Sasol is a nightmare. But nothing beats the North Coast.

Nandisa Nandi Ngcobo – Always crying at the traffic circle but I eventually manage. Can someone start a traffic circle master class please and thanks in advance.

Vinay Kalopdeo – The roads in Ballito and Salt Rock are so bad and these areas are considered up market. They are littered with potholes and too many uneven surfaces. Our vehicles are really take a beating, on a daily basis.

Kelly Coates – There is a definite need for more pavements for all the people walking to and from work – it is crazy to see that this has not been done for our communities. That is one major standout for me. Then, the lack of efficiency on getting potholes/damage/broken robots fixed. It always seems to be someone else’s problem, and we sit for YEARS without anything being fixed. It feels like there is a general lack of pride and respect for our community, and it feels like too many private parties have to come together to make improvements or fixes.
