The picture you see attached is not some arcane version of Where’s Wally, but rather the 1994 edition of the Tugela Raft Race – as covered in the Courier’s March 18, 1994 edition.

The annual race was one of the North Coast’s most popular events, drawing hundreds of serious paddlers and lazy floaters alike for decades.

Long-organised by the Mandeni Rotary Club, the race lasted until its 47th edition in 2015, before being shuttered.

There are plans at the Mandeni Municipality to reignite the event… watch this space!
