#Reportback: Proposed iLembe water tariff increases are unaffordable, says DA
iLembe DA caucus leader Krsna Sing writes that more needs to be done to cushion the blow for residents.
iLembe DA caucus leader Krsna Sing writes:
The Democratic Alliance in iLembe rejects the 2026/27 draft budget, primarily due to a proposed water and sanitation tariff increase of 13%, among other concerns.
Passing on Umgeni Water’s bulk supply hike to residents is unjustified, especially given the current economic climate. With uncertainties around global instability, expected fuel hikes and a high cost of living, this increase will devastate residents and businesses. We should cushion households, not add to the burden.
We urge the municipality to negotiate with uMngeni-uThukela Water to prioritise residents.
Additionally, allocations for repairs, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades are insufficient. Existing infrastructure needs urgent upgrading as communities face daily water shortages. Investment is needed now.
The public participation process will start soon through formal objections and public meetings. We encourage all residents to participate, air their views and concerns, and reject this increase while the process is open.
