Support comedy shows in aid of Salt Rock special needs school in dire straits

Bloom presents 'Laughter is the Best Medicine' with Lisa and Aaron Mcilroy.

The global coronavirus pandemic and national lockdown has forced a special needs centre to abandon its usual fundraising events, leaving the school in dire straits.

Determined to keep things going, Salt Rock school Bloom is asking you to support its online comedy shows with Lisa and Aaron Mcilroy next week.

Bloom fundraising coordinator, Debbie Nicholson said the special needs centre was in a dire situation and urgently needed the support of the community.

“It is so much more than just a school,” she said, adding that the school doubles as a medical centre that provides occupational and speech therapy to special needs children.

Nicholson said that two of their largest fundraising events had been cancelled this year owing to the global pandemic of Covid-19 and the nationwide lockdown.

One of these events included the very popular golf day fundraising event, which Debbie said brings in a large portion of funds.

At the moment, the school is running well into the red and needs every bit of support it can muster.

“Despite the crisis, everybody still needs a laugh, especially in times like these. That is how we came up with the comedy show idea and thankfully long-standing friends of the centre Lisa and Aaron Mcilroy were game on joining in.”

The comedy shows are set to be aired live online, and tickets are priced at R150, or R400 for all three evenings.

Shows are set to run on June 4, 11 and 18.

A live link, once you have bought your ticket/s, will be sent to you on the day of the show.

To make a donation to the school, get in contact with Debbie Nicholson at debbie@bloomcentre.co.za or call her at 082 290 9313.

NOTE: This article has been amended to reflect that the school is not at risk of closing down.
