Karate South Africa recently held the first all styles provincial coloured belt tournament at the Tongaat Indoor Sport Centre. The competition was the brain child of Protea head coach, sensei Brando Pillay, affording the top four athletes the chance to earn KZN development colours. Students from all over KZN pitted their skills against each other in two disciplines – kata and kumite.
Skisa Ballito karate academy entered two students and both excelled in their respective divisions. Eleven year old Kaitlyn Demant won bronze for kata and gold for kumite, while Calvin Ngwara (12) also took home gold for kumite, narrowly missing out on a medal for kata. Both were rewarded with KZN development colours for their achievements.
