Amateurs take a swing at World Golfers Championship

Amateurs take on four of KZN's golf courses for Championship title.

Golfers from across the globe teed-off the 20th World Amateur Golfers Championship (WGC) on Tuesday, November 4. The event is played over four days, spanning 72 holes of golf at four prestigious courses in KZN.

Umhlali Country Club, Durban Country Club, Mount Edgecombe Country Club, Selbourne Park Golf Club were selected as the venues for this prestigious event. Any amateur may enter, provided they are over the age of sixteen and have an official handicap. The three hundred participating players from twenty-four countries are grouped into five flights according to handicap. The World Golfers Invitational (WGI) will be running at the same time as the WGC and sees VIPs and businessmen alike including the Princess Birgitta of Sweden on the green.

“We have been hosting this event for four consecutive years and we are really proud to welcome back all the players. It is a well run and well supported event,” said Umhlali Country Club golf manager and club pro Derick Reinke.

He described the local course as forgiving and enjoyable for all golf enthusiasts.

A special two day tribute event was introduced this year in memory of Sven Tumba, the founder of WGC. The Sven Tumba Classic took place at Beachwood Country Club and Prince’s Grant Country Club. The entry fee of 100 Euro per player was donated to the Sven Tumba Education Fund.

A total of 30 000 USD will be awarded to the winners of the three tournaments.
