Hearing the call of the single track

Gears 4 Ears tackle wet trail for fundraiser.

Gears 4 Ears hosted its fourth annual mountain bike ride fundraiser in aid of cochlear implant candidates at a very wet Holla Trails on Sunday, October 26.

The soaking weather did not dampen the spirits of the 180 enthusiastic riders who took on the challenging 48km and 19km routes. The mud laden participants all emerged ‘victorious’ and sported wide smiles at the end as they received a medal and cold drink for their efforts.

Yvette Roberts took the honours in the women’s 48km race while Tyronne White was the first man home over the same distance. Scelo Mabaso crossed the line first in the 19km race for men and Lynn Garnham did the same in the women’s competition.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.

These implants are a dream for many deaf or those with limited hearing, but due to the exceptionally high cost it remains out of reach for most people. Gears 4 Ears raises funds to make this surgery more accessible.
