Bird soars at Sugar Rush

Tyron Bird races to victory.

Sugar Rush Park hosted the latest edition of the Bestmed Ballito Expedition on Saturday, November 8.

According to route director Darren Herbst, the feature route was “one tough cookie”, with a total elevation of 900m, 25km of new trails, four fresh forest sections and at least three river crossings. “There’s also some amazing single-track and a couple of hairy climbs,” said Herbst.

Kokstad-based mountain biker Tyron Bird made a daring solo escape in the final 15km to take his maiden win in the event.

Racing for team Quattro, the rider held a small but determined chasing group at bay to claim victory in the 50km race in a time of 1:53:37.

Ryan Piercey followed him across the line to earn the runner-up spot in 1:54:14, with Joshua Nelson just pipping Brad Stroberg for third in 1:55:33.

In the women’s race, multiple national veteran road champion Isabel Moolman secured a convincing win in 2:23:14.
