Surfers of all ages took to the water at Umhlanga main beach on Sunday, November 9 to compete in the second Wave Wizards surf club event of 2014.
The three part series culminates in the Lizzard summer surf event which kicks off the annual Umhlanga Summer Festival at the end of the year.
The weather was perfect and the day started off with small, slightly messy surf of 2-3 feet which gradually improved to 3-4 feet later in the morning.
Bevan Willis from Umdloti handled the conditions the best, posting some of the highest wave scores to ultimately edge out Shane Sykes for the win.
The North Coast surfers often had the better of their Durban rivals as they took victories in numerous competition divisions.
Calvin Goor from Salt Rock won the u14 boys section, while local surf coach Quintin Jones showed that he still ‘has it’ by winning the masters (35 plus) division.
Sophie Bell from Salt Rock confirmed her class as she dominated the U14 girls division.
Umhlanga surf club chairman and Hurricane brand manager, Jestyn Viljoen, was thrilled with the outcome.
“Our club is all about encouraging the really small kids to experience competitions for the first time. Today was a perfect day for all the surfers and their families”, said Viljoen.
