One, two, seven goals for the win

Salt Rock soccer tournament produces lots of goals and even more fun.

On hot, sunny Sunday, three soccer teams played in the Salt Rock soccer tournament with the hope of winning a new soccer kit.

The three competing teams, Shayamoya, Salt Rock United and Super Strikers were full of enthusiasm and energy.

“Soccer keeps people off the street and away from crime,” said tournament organiser Laytie Dlamini, who started playing in 2010.

The soccer enthusiast started the Salt Rock United team and has received a lot of support by his employer, Susie Ratcliffe, treasurer of Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch.

“The Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch sponsored the soccer kits for the winning team, as we wanted to support the positive work Laytie is doing in our community. He is the soccer organiser, player and couch,” said Ratcliffe.

The Salt Rock United team practice from Monday to Thursday and it is clear that Dlamini is doing a good job, as they play with more passion and energy than some professional soccer players do.

After a tough three games, Shayamoya managed to score the most goals, seven in total, and were declared the winners.

Salt Rock United came a close second, leaving the Super Strikers in third place.

Who knows, one of Dlamini’s guys might play for Bafana Bafana one day.
