Umdloti surfer aims high
Bevan Willis aims to qualify for the national surf team this year.
Umdloti boy Bevan Willis (16) has his sights firmly set on qualifying for the 2015 national surf team to represent South Africa in Peru later this year at the ISA World Surfing Games.
Bevan had a string of successes in 2014, capping off the year with a win in the U18 boys division of the Lizzard Hurricane Surf Event at Umhlanga’s main beach.
The competition attracting some of SA’s top surfers, was held in association with Surfing South Africa and opened up the Umhlanga Summer Festival.
Bevan has a scholarship with Northwood School and will also be aiming to get top marks in grade 11 this year.
“I have been surfing a lot in the holidays and preparing for the trials at the end of January. It is my biggest goal to make the SA team and represent my country, but also keep a balance with my school work”, said Willis.
The SA team trials will be held at Uvongo on the South Coast on January 30.
Other top local surfers vying for a team spot in the U18 boys division are Shane Sykes, Richard Kidd and Ntando Msibi.
