Massive support for Ryan Walker Foundation

Generous contributions made to help support Ryan Walker.

Close to R40 000 was raised for the Ryan Walker Foundation by Bob Russell’s boot camp challenge on Thursday and Friday last week.

A fitness challenge was created for Russell’s boot camp members and everyone who wanted to join in on the sweat and tears to raise funds for Walker, a former Sharks player suffering with motor neuron disease (MND).

Those brave enough, tackled a 6km course where you had to complete five marine burpees every 500m.

“It has been absolutely amazing,” said Russell.

Russell said he had about 100 people taking part in the challenge, each of whom made some real effort to contribute something for Walker’s medical bills.

“People really went out there and made some valuable contributions,” said Russell.

Russell said some even asked if they could do the challenge again to continue raising funds for Walker.

Former rugby players Stefan Terblanche and Butch James also threw in their support and took part in the 6km course.

“Whenever someone was feeling tired or experienced some pain during the challenge, they just focussd on Ryan and that kept everyone going. It was incredible,” said Russell.

Walker said he had been very humbled by the response.

“We have seen a fantastic side to people. Even though they are complete strangers, we have seen how good people can be,” said Walker.

Walker was diagnosed with MND in 2012.

“I am battling with climbing stairs and it is difficult to pick things up with my hands being very weak, but we are staying positive,” said Walker.
