Classic Winter surfing

North Coast surfers shred on home surf for the Winter Classic title.

The annual Winter Classic of the North Coast Boardriders Surf Contest Series was held on Saturday, May 2 at Surfers (Willard Beach in Ballito).

The perfect winter’s day with light winds and quality waves made for spectacular surfing as competitors went all out to show their skills, to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Almost all the top surfers from the North Coast were in attendance, all doing their best to impress the judges to secure the prestigious title as well as some of the outstanding prizes from event sponsors Billabong, Dakine and Groundswell Surf Shop.

The U15 final was a surf off between newcomer Tim Sharrock and KZN top junior, Calvin Goor.

Calvin found the better waves and performed some impressive manoeuvres to take the title.

The U20 division consisted of some of KZN`s finest junior surfers which included young Calvin Goor surfing back to back finals.

The lead was held by Goor for the majority of the final heat, but with some spectacular surfing in the dying minutes, Richard Kidd edged ahead and managed to hold on untill the final buzzer.

Calvin Goor secured second place with Braiden Coates and another newcomer, Francios Groenewald, taking third and fourth respectively.

The open mens final was another close affair.

The lead changed hands consistently with surfers trying to position themselves on high scoring waves.

In the end Jaco Kapp managed to do enough to defend his open division title, with Ryan Rogers coming in second and Byron Lindsay in third.

All entry fees raised will be donated charity. The North Coast Boardriders club is scheduling their next event in July.
