Sykes blows the competition away

Local surfer Justin Sykes took part in the recent Lizzard Hurricane Surf contest in Umhlanga

Salt Rock surfer Justin Sykes beat all contenders to take top spot in the recent Lizzard Hurricane Surf contest in Umhlanga.

The contest got off to a perfect start at Bronze Beach, with only a gentle south west breeze and an ocean that offered up sizeable 4-6 ft wave faces and a contestable 2-3 foot bowl wave.

These conditions were a relief for surfers and organiser alike after the previous week’s howling south easter.

Close on 70 surfers took part in 28 heats throughout the day.

“Conditions were really good in the morning with a nice offshore swell, I also enjoyed riding with the south westerly that came up a bit later in the day,” said Sykes.

Competing in the Open Men’s division, Sykes progressed to the final where he opened his ride with a dominant 7.5 score.

This proved too much for his closest competitors – Kyle Lane, Matt Kruger and Nathan Wallace – who ended up having to duke it out among themselves for second and third.

“I did not see the other surfers’ waves in that last heat – but I was super stoked with the 7.5 score.”

Sykes not only walked away with the Open Men’s title but also bagged the coveted ‘Surfer of the Contest’ award. Club chairman Jestyn Viljoen thanked their sponsors, surfers and supporters for making the event possible.

“I would also just like to thank Anthony Molgowa and his team of lifeguards for always making us feel welcome and being so helpful.”

The next Wave Wizards event will be on November 5 at Bronze Beach.
