Dolphins Hockey Club grows with surprising speed

The long term vision is to transform Dolphins Rugby Club into the Dolphins Sports Club.

In just a few weeks, the newly formed Dolphins Hockey Club has grown in leaps and bounds, so much so that Dolphins Rugby chairman Kevin Murphy said the ladies would soon overtake the rugby teams.

Mia Naudé started the group just three weeks ago with five players, now they already have more than 30 and are looking at filling out their second team.

“It has been amazing how much response there has been, it just goes to show how popular hockey is on the Dolphin Coast,” said Naudé.

At present they only have a ladies team but are hoping to expand to include a mens and junior teams. This is all part of the long term expansion of the Dolphins Rugby Club into the Dolphins Sports Club, which will eventually have teams playing several different sports.

“It has been our aim for a long time to expand beyond rugby and it is good to see it start coming together,” Murphy told the Courier.

At present, the team has not entered into any leagues as they are still busy finding their feet. However, they will be lining up friendly matches throughout the year as they build their strength.

The team meets every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Sugar Rush Park for practice. They come together at 5.30pm for 6pm and practice for an hour. The team is coached by both Naudé and Gary Storey, who was a provincial player back in his day.

Naudé extended her thanks for all those who had come on board so far to bring Dolphins Hockey to life, particularly to Crush Nightclub for sponsoring the team.

Superheroes vs Sports heroes

Crush Night Club will be hosting a fundraising evening this Saturday, January 17, with a dress up theme of Superheroes vs Sports heroes. Entry is R30 for those in costume and R50 for plain Janes.
