Conjuring up some magic

The Wave Wizards contest got off to a perfect start earlier this month as surfers and their families enjoyed warm sunshine on the beach.

Several Dolphin Coast surfers claimed wins at the recent Wave Wizards contest at Bronze Beach in Umhlanga.

Salt Rock’s Sophie Bell took the win in the open ladies’ category while Ballito surfer Calvin Goor claimed the win for the U18 boys division, Sheffield’s Julian Carbonal took first in the U14 boys and Westbrook’s Andrew Banks won the master men’s competition.

Conditions were difficult but very contestable with 3-4 ft waves and the occasional 5ft set coming through.

There was a moderate south west wind which proved tricky but provided plenty of waves.

The ladies found it very challenging in the Open Ladies low scoring final heat.

Sophie Bell and Tasha Mentasti changed the lead position a few times during the heat but it was Bell that narrowly beat her opponent for the win.

The U18 boys was another extremely close final where less than half a point divided the top three surfers. In the end it was Calvin Goor who surfed into the win, followed by Brayden Bergset in second, Saxton Randall third and Jaime Irvine in fourth.
