Cycling the hills of Groutville
The annual cycling event was started last year by Mqungebe Ngobese with the aim of promoting social cohesion, sportsmanship and enhancing participation of youth in sports.
About 45 cyclists took part in The Noble Race in Groutville on Saturday.
The 25km MTB route started at the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum, going up Cranbrook Road to the farmland in the Mgigimbe area and finished back at the museum in Groutville.
“The distance was short but the terrain was tough which made for some extremely exciting racing.
From the gun there were some small attacks from the Bluff Meat Supply teams which were all brought back together when the race hit the dirt,” said Ngobese.
Eighteen-year-old Kusaselihle Ngidi walked away the 2019 champion and won himself R3000.
Nkululeko Phewa bagged second position (R2400) and Nhlanhla Mthembu (19) took 3rd position (R2000). They all won a free entry into the Noble Race Extreme.
The 2019 race was organised in partnership with Ilembe district municipality, Siza Water, Enterprise iLembe and the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum.
“The next Noble Race will take place in July 2020 as the Noble Race Extreme, a 155 km mountain bike race starting at the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum and finishing at the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick,” said Ngobese.
