Local dance studio scoops top honours at dance festival

Local dancers scooped top honours at the Natal Festival of Dance hosted at Eden College from 22 to 25 September.

The event was attended by 21 dance studios from across the province who participated in various categories. Local dance studio, Sugar Dance did themselves proud, claiming the top trophies for the highest senior modern and hip hop score.

Three North Coast dance studios showcased their dancers in the hip hop, contemporary, modern ballet and tap disciplines.

Caraline Hill and Thomas Youens from Sugar Dance studio took first place in the senior modern category, while Samantha Southwood placed first in the highly contested senior hip hop division.

The three dancers also scored 90 percent in their group category and were in the running for judges choice, best contemporary group.

Junior dancer, Gabriella Biagi competed in 11 dance categories and walked away with six gold medals, three silver and two bronze.

The talented 10-year-old also walked away with the prestigious Most Promising Modern Junior trophy.

Gabriella represented SA at the Junior World Championships in London earlier this year, where she received two silver medals in two separate genres.

“The festival has a lot of history and strong, talented competition. We really enjoyed ourselves and the North Coast was well represented by Sugar Dance, Swish and Footworx dance studios,” said Sugar Dance studio owner, Julie Robert.
