Ballito dad among 120 drone pilots set to compete in World Drone Champs
Drone racing is a relatively new and tricky sport, but this seems easily grasped with Stephen's laid back attitude in light of his success at local, provincial and national levels.
Ballito resident Stephen Gore has been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming World Drone Championships held in China on December 13 to 15.
One hundred and twenty of the best drone pilots in the world from over 26 countries compete for the championship crown.
Drone racing is a relatively new and tricky sport, but this seems easily grasped with Stephen’s laid back attitude in light of his success at local, provincial and national levels.
“We use virtual reality goggles that offer a first person view (FPV) from a camera mounted on the front of the drone,” said Stephen.
“The batteries do not last longer than a few minutes, but the machines can reach up to 160 kilometers an hour”.
The drones that Stephen flies are custom built for their purpose and are extremely delicate.
“I fly a lot of freestyle and enjoy making videos at high speed and in close proximity to things,” said Stephen who is headlining a drone exhibition at the East London Show this week.
Stephen will be leaving for China on December 10 for the World Drone Championships and we wish him well on his journey.
