Superheroes ride with purpose

Two big-hearted North Coast riders took part in the 10th edition of South Africa’s toughest two-day stage cycle ride from Johannesburg to Durban earlier this month.

This year 74 cyclists including local riders Dylan Cherry and Chloe Bateson took on the gruelling 606 kilometre cycle to raise funds and awareness for the Mr Price (MRP) Foundation.

To date the the foundation has raised over R2 million since the inaugural ride in 2010 which goes towards empowering youth in low-income communities through education and skills development.

Day one covered 364 kilometres with cyclists riding from 4.30am till 6pm while day two’s start at 4am covered 261 kilometres with riders reaching the finish mark in Durban at 4.30pm.

Salt Rock’s Cherry was part of the MRP sport team which included Springbok rugby legends Joel Stransky, Jeremy Thompson, Wayne Fyvie and Warren Brosnihan.

“The Ride for MRP Foundation was an opportunity to challenge myself, while making a difference in other people’s lives,” said Cherry.

There are currently 98 primary schools which are a part of the foundation’s programme. Schools clusters are in Tongaat (20), Hammarsdale (20), QwaQwa (20), Soweto (20) and Mitchell’s Plain (18).

Five KwaDukuza schools are currently in sustainability phase, having successfully exited the programme.
