Boxing club gets much needed boost
Club chairman Nkosingiphile Mhlongo said there were 24 members and most of them young boys and girls who shared two pairs of boxing gloves between them.
Inembe Boxing Club members in Mandeni were delighted to receive a Christmas gift of new boxing equipment from Mandeni municipality.
Club chairman Nkosingiphile Mhlongo said there were 24 members and most of them young boys and girls who shared two pairs of boxing gloves between them.
The gift included boxing gloves, punching bags, skipping ropes and protective gear.
“The equipment we were using was very old and I had bought two boxing gloves that were used only for sparring. All 24 members had to wait for their turn to use those gloves, which was making our lives very difficult. Now that we have new five gloves, two punching bags and other training equipment, our training will be much easier,” said Mhlongo.
He said boxing played an important role in installing discipline in the youth and keeping them off the streets.
The club was started by his father in 1988, where he trained his son to the level of professional boxer.
But unemployment kept Mhlongo from pursuing his boxing career and he is now passionate about investing in the youth and growing the sport in Mandeni.
