Kids lapping up MTB challenge

The heat was not enough to deter the young riders as they tackled the inaugural Seeff North Coast MTB Schools Lap series on Sunday.

In extreme humidity and temperatures hovering in the high 20s, close to 100 riders took on the the course laid out around Umhlali Preparatory school.

The school hosted the first event of the three part series.

In collaboration with Sugar Rats Club, Elite Eventures and Seeff North Coast the MTB lap series is targeted specifically at primary school pupils from grade one to seven.

Hosted at three different venues during the months of February and March, the series is designed to provide a different cycling experience, which will also assist the children with their training for future events on the KZN MTB calendar.

“Our aim is to take the stress out of racing and just enjoy time outdoors on bikes in a family environment,” said Seeff North Coast’s director Tim Johnson.

Johnson said the company’s vision was to support the growth and development of cycling at primary school level by augmenting the sponsorship needed to develop grassroots mountain biking in the region.

“Mountain biking enables children to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, spend time with friends and family, and develop confidence and physical literacy. It is also a great way to meet and connect with other families who cycle,” said Johnson.

The next event in the series will be held at Ashton International College on March 1 with the final edition taking place at Seaton Estate on March 15.
