Dusi grit and glory for father and son-in-law
Despite suffering at the hands of the river grit and determination prevailed and Price and Van Rensburg crossed the finish line to standing ovations as spectators bore witness to the true triumph of the human spirit.
The Dusi canoe marathon came to a thrilling end at Blue Lagoon last Saturday, the third and final day of the 120km gruelling event but the real winners, from a Dolphin Coast perspective, were father and son-in-law team Russell van Rensburg and GV Price who completed the last 24km of the challenge on foot after a freak crash into rocks broke their boat in half.
However, determined to finish, in true Dusi style the pair picked up their pieces and headed for Durban, crossing the finish line in a time of 20:04 and earning Price (66) his 40th Dusi medal and Van Renburg claiming his 10th.
According to Prices’s daughter, Taryn van Rensburg, her father and husband broke their boat at the last rapid when the boat hit a rock.

Price claimed his hard-earned 40th medal, 42 years after completing his first Dusi in 1978.
