Olympic hopeful keeps his head in the game

Cameron has chosen to look at the positive side of the lockdown, which he said has given him a better chance to prepare.

Ballito backstroke swimmer Cameron Parnell is training from home, preparing for the Olympic qualifiers that were postponed due to the national lockdown.

Cameron has chosen to look at the positive side of the lockdown, which he said has given him a better chance to prepare.

“Since I cannot train at the pool in Durban and do the proper mileage that I am supposed to be doing, I am doing gym exercises and swimming in my small home pool with a cord around my waist to keep me in one spot. I am taking this positively as it is allows me to not just look at going to the Olympics but to improve my overall performance,” said Parnell.

The 21-year-old said his father introduced him to the sport when he was 12 or 13 years old.

“I was doing other sports in school and my father got me a swimming coach and asked if I wanted to take swimming lessons. I said, why not. I am now enjoying it and hopefully, I will succeed.”

He competed at the SA championships and always finished in the top five.

Parnell is also a passionate cyclist who has completed six Amashova cycle events and whenever the weather is great, he goes out fishing.
