Get on your bike and cycle your way to supporting those in need

Anyone can take part by riding their indoor trainer for six hours to raise funds to help support people across any sector who are no longer getting an income.

The coronavirus pandemic has put on hold many key moments in the fundraising calendar, including marathons and other sporting events.

But this has not stopped North Coast athletes who continue to raise funds for those affected by the pandemic.

Pedal for the people

Scott Pearmain, a Holla ambassador and Sugar Rats Club co-owner initially started the challenge to help Holla staff and their families hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

But it exploded with interest and will now reach many more people.

Anyone can take part by riding their indoor trainer for six hours to raise funds to help support people across any sector who are no longer getting an income.

Scott took on the six-hour challenge on Saturday on his indoor training bike in his garage, using a cycling training app to record his progress.

Jasper van Vessem and the Holla Trails team pre lockdown.

“We are such a tight knit community that people were more than willing to help our guys out. There was so much demand from other people who wanted to participate that we decided to carry it on and hopefully take it all the way to the end of lockdown. We had such great donations and pledges that we have surpassed our target and as of today we had already raised R20 000 for Holla alone. We have made this an open challenge, where anyone with an indoor trainer can jump on for a six-hour shift and pledge to a cause personal to them!” said Pearmain.

The hashtag is #pedalforthepeople.

“We hope it will have a viral effect whereby employees and even small businesses can be saved or helped during this time.”

Be the Difference

The ‘Be the Difference’ fundraising challenge was to encourage a 130km virtual cycling challenge.

The challenge was started by ‘Ashton Families Who Care’ who teamed up with KwaDukuza municipality to support families affected by the pandemic.

You can support a rider by donating R1 for every kilometre they ride or donate R130 and be a rider.

Every R400 donated provides a family of four with a food box to last a month.
