Rip Curl announces online surf contest

Surfers are being urged to submit their best clips following the announcement of the Rip Curl E-Pro Online surf event which has been confirmed for South Africa.

The second contest in the global Surf Web Series kicks off on August 1 and will run until August 15, an exclusive event for South African surfers.

Due to the recent run of amazing surf, competition organisers have allowed competitors to enter any waves that were surfed between March 1 and July 25.

Epic cash prizes include a R10 000 first place prize, followed by R5 000 for second.

Red Bull have also dropped in with a R10 000 Red Bull Best Tube Ride prize.

Surfers such as Chad Du Toit, Max and Jake Elkington, Eli Beukes, Luke Slijpen, Dan Emslie, Mike Frew, Surprize Maphumulo, James Ribbink, Davey Van Zyl, Dylan Lightfoot and Dan Redman have already entered.

Secretary for the iLembe Surf Riders, Dee Southwood said local surfers have expressed interest in the competition and they would not have to worry about registration fees paid towards SSA.

According to Southwood, local line-up may include Beyrick De Vries and the Sykes brothers, Justin and Shane.

In order to compete, surfers have to be registered with SSA.

“Our club registered members will also not have to pay the registration fees, as their membership fees for the year will cover this cost,” she said.

Rules are simple and surfers are encouraged to submit one clip per heat.

Every heat advanced requires another clip to be used.

Free-surfing clips may be used, but they must be of South African surfers on South African waves only and wave height is restricted to 8 feet.
