Groms ride high at iLembe Surfing Association trials
The 22 boys and girls were battling the waves to earn a spot in the iLembe grom team that will compete in the provincial games in Durban on March 20 and 21.
Impressive performances were given by young surfers competing at the iLembe Surfing Association grom trials at Tiffany’s beach on Sunday.
The 22 boys and girls were battling the waves to earn a spot in the iLembe grom team that will compete in the provincial games in Durban on March 20 and 21.
The team is still to be announced.
iLembe Surfers Association chairman Brian Dougherty said he was pleased to see the surfers between the age of 10 and 16 putting up a good show in sizeable waves.
“The level of surfing among the grom entrants has grown drastically over the years and most notably among the iLembe Development squad of surfers based at Salt Rock,” said Dougherty.
He thanked all involved in the development of the young surfers in the region, but is concerned that there is a shortage of young girls in the team.
“We encourage young girls to come and join the fun.”
