Triple30 fills Comrades void with own make-shift 3-day run
In the absence of an in-person Comrades Marathon this year, the runners decided not to let their training go to waste and to host an event of their own.
Dolphin Coast Striders (DCS) runners took to the streets this past weekend, running the Comrades Marathon route over 3 days.
In the absence of an in-person Comrades Marathon this year, the runners decided not to let their training go to waste and to host an event of their own.
Around 20 runners took off at 6am on Friday, June 11, from the traditional down run starting point of Pietermaritzburg City Hall.

The event was termed the Triple30, as the group ran a distance of 30kms for 3 consecutive days to make up the total distance.
“The first day took us to Cato Ridge where we all stayed in Botha’s Hill, resting up for the weekend,” said DCS chairman, Arthur Bertram.

New runners joined the intrepid 20 over the weekend as the group made their way down to the finish line at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
As the event was specifically created for the DCS, members could join for as little or as long as they liked.

“It was great because we had a few members who would not have been able to make the 30km distance but could join in on the fun.”
On Sunday, June 13 – which was set to be the day of the Comrades Marathon if it had gone ahead – almost 50 DCS runners made the final journey from Kloof to Durban central.
In place of the in-person marathon, the Comrades also held a virtual event on Sunday where people from across the globe could run a distance of 21.1, 45 or 90km.

“We had a few guys who chose to run the 21km as part of our last day so it made for a special event in the end for all of us.”
