Ballito freestyler makes top 4 of Red Bull Dance Your Style

Ballito dancer Samantha Southwood (16) held her own against some of SA’s hottest dance talent, making it into the top 4 of the Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifier event.

Held in Durban in June, the dance competition saw Samantha face off against 60 dancers on the road to the world final.

Although she was eliminated in the semi-finals, making it into the top 4 is an achievement worth noting.

One of the youngest dancers to enter, Samantha faced stiff competition and had only 30 seconds to wow the crowd, which had the final say over who wins each round.

The Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifier was attended by South Africa’s top dancing talent.

It is a one-one street dance battle where dancers dance to unpredictable hits, performing any street dance style.

Samantha’s competition format was freestyle and although she may not have won the event her coach and mentor, Verb Bhengu of Durban did.

Verb will go on to battle it out against dancers from across the country for his chance to be selected to represent South Africa in the world finals, held in December.

The national finals will be held in Johannesburg come October.

All hope is however not lost as Samantha may still have a chance at making it through to nationals through her video entry.

Samantha has been dancing since the age of 6 and has taken part in a number of competitions.

In 2019, she placed 2nd for her Hip Hop solo, and 2nd again for her Hip Hop duo routines at the Commonwealth Dance Games.
