KwaDukuza top basketball players ask for help to get to interprovincial championships

KwaDukuza’s Kings and Queens are both provincial basketball medallists, but are desperate for sponsorship to take the next step.

In the recent KwaZulu-Natal basketball championships, the Kings beat teams from Maritzburg and Zululand to take top honours, while the Queens placed second.

This has qualified them both for the interprovincial championships that are to be held over the course of the next month.

By virtue of their win, the Kings are the hosts of one of 4 male conferences that will be played across the country on August 28 and 29.

The conferences have been kept separate for coronavirus concerns with the top 2 teams from 2 provinces facing off in each.

The Kings will be up against the PMB Warriors (2nd placed finishers in KZN champs), as well as the visiting Secunda Unidos and Chosen Few from Mpumalanga.

The winner of each conference will face off in a tournament later in the year for a chance to represent South Africa in the televised African Basketball League.

As there is not a suitable court to host the conference in KwaDukuza, the team have had to book a court in Howick for the event.

With no local sporting body to support them, the players and staff have to pay travel and accommodation costs out of their own pockets.

“We are looking for any support that we can get. The players have worked so hard to compete and they should not be left out if they cannot afford the costs,” said team chairman Billy Khambule.

The Queens are facing a similar problem for their competition which is to be held in Maritzburg in September.
