Historic double win sees Ballito surfer Barry Campbell crowned undisputed king of the surf
Barry was untroubled in his heat, in difficult surfing conditions, scoring an 8.7 and 6.7 while competitors struggled to score 5s.
Ballito surfer Barry Campbell completed an historic double last weekend by winning the veterans section of the South African Longboard Championships (SALC) in Jeffrey’s Bay.
It was his second win in as many weeks after he won the 60+ section of the South African Masters Championships on August 22.
The double is particularly impressive given that the 2 wins were in different disciplines, on short and long surfboards respectively.
“We’ve had perfect conditions these last two weeks and windy JBay was no different. It feels great to come out with another win!” said an elated Barry.
Barry was untroubled in his heat, scoring an 8.7 and 6.7 while competitors struggled to score 5s.
This meant he went through to the final by a margin of almost 9 points out of a total of 20.
The final was a closer affair however, and it took strong surfing from Barry to edge out Stephen Hair with a final score of 15.10.
The win also makes it 4 longboard titles in a row.
He is the undisputed king of the surf in the 60 to 70 age bracket in South Africa.
