A mad run by 6 North Coast runners to raise funds for education
MAD2Run hopes to raise R2-million this year to fund scholars in achieving academic excellence. It has raised almost R5.5-million since 2014.
It is often said that you have to be mad to be a runner, but you definitely have to be bonkers to tackle a gruesome 1 500km run from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
Six North Coast runners will join a 44-strong group taking part in a 24-hour relay sectioned into crews of 6, running 80kms per shift.
Local runners Lauren Abdo, Linda Rudolph, Simone Barrett, Willa van der Heever, Daniel de Kretser and Kyle van der Heever will join the race on October 8.
Each runner is expected to run a minimum of 20km per day, with a total of 140km in the week.
The run is a fundraiser for the Make A Difference (MAD) Leadership Foundation, which hosts two annual cross-country events, MAD2Run and MAD2Ride.

Runner and supporter of the MAD Leadership Foundation, Simone Barrett said they have every intention of going the extra mile.
“Our aim is to raise as much money as possible,” she said, adding that they held a fundraiser golf day at Simbithi on Tuesday with a field of 80 golfers.
Golf day coordinator, Warren Rudolph said they hoped to raise R80 000 through the golf day and auction, with a variety of sponsors supporting the initiative.
Some items on auction included a 2-night stay at Sun City’s Cascades with two rounds of golf valued at R18500, a 2-night stay at Selborne Hotel in Pennington, with a round of golf valued at R13 000 and an unbelievable Ryder Cup Team Europe Tour golf bag valued at R11 500.
Platinum sponsors Ashton International College Ballito, who donated R20 000 said they were very excited to be part of the fundraiser golf day.
“We at Ashton know that education makes all the difference and believe in the efforts of the MAD Leadership Foundation,” said Ashton marketing manager, Deneil Botterill.
Curro Mount Richmore also supported the event, sponsoring prizes and closest to the pin on the 17th.
