Sheffield runner Andrew Erasmus bags silver in Karkloof 100 Miler

Sheffield resident Andrew Erasmus delivered yet another impressive performance in the Karkloof 100 Miler trail run, bringing home silver on September 26.

This is the third second place finish in a row for Andrew who remains undeterred, determined to take the top spot in next year’s event.

“Look I would obviously have liked to win it, but I am really proud of my run in such difficult conditions,” he said.

The run was not rained out, or covered in snow, but rather it was swelteringly hot conditions which made the event a particular challenge.

“I have done 4 full 100 milers and this was by far my slowest time, which was the same across the board,” he said, after covering 100 miles of trail in just 20 hours and 4 minutes.

When running over such long distances, the training and condition of your body are critical, but it becomes more of a mind-over-matter scenario, he said.

This was particularly evident in the most recent race when the first 80 kilometres were run in the dark with nothing but a headlight to navigate with.

When running through the night, all you have is a headlight and your thoughts to get you through.

“You just have to keep going, however you manage to do that. Some people do it by thinking of other things, I try to push most of my thoughts away and just focus on the running.”

Andrew thanked his wife, brother and other supporting crew who were with him for as much of the journey as possible, getting him through some of the more difficult periods.

He was one of a number of Dolphin Coast Striders runners who took on various distances in the Karkloof Trails Series.

Of particular note are Marc McClure, Anne Lyle, Graham Wood and Jacques van der Venter who all completed the 50 miler on the day.

“We were so proud of our Dolphins members who tackled the various events, from seasoned ultra distance mountain goats on the 100 Miler and 50 Miler, to members of last year’s JumpStart programme who took on the 21k and 10k,” said Dolphins chairman, Arthur Bertram.
