KZN’s best ladies light up the Umhlali Country Club bowling greens
After the tournament had to be cancelled last year because of the Covid-19 lockdown, some of the province's best bowlers were eager to show that the rust had worn off.
Ninety-six women from across KwaZulu-Natal descended on Umhlali Country Club’s bowling greens at the weekend to do battle in the Ladies Dolphin Classic.
After the tournament had to be cancelled last year because of the Covid-19 lockdown, some of the province’s best bowlers were eager to show that the rust had worn off.
Twenty-four teams of 4, drawn from as far afield as the South Coast and inland, competed in 5 games of 15 ends.
“Lawn bowls is traditionally played over 21 ends, but the weekend’s shortened games made it possible for more teams to face each other,” said tournament manager Billy Foster.
Each player bowls twice from each end, with the winner of each game decided by the total number of shots won after 15 ends.
“We really had a great turnout this year, with a particularly high competition level. Many of the women are district and provincial players, so the standard has been excellent,” he said.
Aside from the grand prize, winners were also picked from each session to share the prize money of R16 500.
Linda Tolmay (captain), Natalie Botha, Janine Ann den Toorn and Lindsay Owen emerged as the winning team.
