Cows on the ‘moo’ve in honour of late cycle buddies at aQuellé Tour Durban

In honour of the late Max du Plooy, the Cows charity fundraising organisation will be ‘living life to the Max’ while riding in the aQuellé Tour Durban cycling event on November 28.

A Midlands-based charity group, the Cows compete in many sport events to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Association of South Africa (CHOC).

This year, their Durban ride will have added impetus, honouring Du Plooy, who tragically lost his life near Tongaat earlier this year, as well as Cows member Gray Braatvedt.

Braatvedt was a loyal Tour Durban rider who turned many heads when he rode the entire race on a unicycle.

The Apocalypse Cows, as the cycling team is known, will this time be dubbed ‘Team Gray’, while carrying the slogan of ‘Live life to the Max’.

“Gray and Max were admired and respected by all and will always remain a part of our special herd,” said regional organiser of the Cows in KwaZulu-Natal, Durbs Daisy.

The Cows will be decked out in their signature outfits, with members riding both the serious 135km ride and the social 45km.

Mardeen and JP du Plooy (no relation to Max) are 2 local riders who will be joining the Cows for the 45km.

“We have done 2 Midmar Miles with the Cows and this year decided to join in on the cycling event. It is such a great organisation, we love seeing everyone and raising funds for such a good cause,” said Mardeen, a teacher at Curro Mount Richmore.

The main event will see riders completing 3 laps of the M4 between Moses Mabhida Stadium and Umdloti. Around a dozen of the Cows will complete the main cycle before joining the social ranks in their self-appointed role as general motivators for the stragglers at the back of the pack.

“It is something that we have always done,” said Durbs Daisy.

“We ride hard and then we spend the rest of the day helping those who are struggling, pushing them up the hills and generally encouraging them.

“Cyclists have something of a label of being selfish, so this is one way to show that what we do is all about helping others.”
