Umhlali Angling Club juniors prepare for national tournament

Five U16 KZN anglers are gearing up for the annual national shore angling tournament.

The talented young fishermen selected are Luke Cuthbert, Miguel Nicholson, Ethan Combrinck, Matthew Herselman and Matthew Shepard.

The 2022 junior nationals are to be fished in Struisbaai from January 10 to 14 next year.

This is the first time the KZN Inland Shore Angling Association is sending a team to a national tournament.

But the team needs funds to get there.

Team manager Guy Nicholson said the squad comprises 5 anglers, a manager, a coach and a guide.

Four of the 5 U16 juniors selected are from the Umhlali Angling Club.

“These tournaments are not cheap to attend, especially in the current strained economic climate. We need to raise around R15 500 for each angler to attend the tournament, which is why we are trying to attract as much sponsorship as possible to help lessen the burden on parents and ensure all those selected get to Struisbaai,” said Nicholson.

He said several local companies have already pledged sponsorship, but more support is needed.

“The youngsters have worked hard for this opportunity, so we will keep on knocking on doors.”

The association is also setting up raffles as they have been donated a Gunslinger longboard from the agents, as well as a weekend away at Spotted Grunter in Port St Johns for 4 people and a Deep Sea Fishing Charter.
