Tongaat thunee players pocket winnings at Wild Coast Sun
The duo - the first Tongaat team to win - had to play 6 rounds to reach the finals and said each game was very competitive.
In commemoration of the arrival of Indians in South Africa, a thunee competition was held at the Wild Coast Sun on November 27, where Tongaat players returned with a cash first place prize of R20 000.
Thunee, an indigenous South African card game which originated in Durban, is a popular trick-taking game of the Jack-Nine family.
The Wild Coast Thunee Competition saw 70 teams of two people per team enter.
Winners of the competition, Jaya Naidoo and Nad Nayager also won the October competition, including the Hotshots Thunee competition.
“It is a game of skill and you have to understand your partner. Counting of hands, memorizing cards and taking calculated risks are important aspects to win games,” said Naidoo.

They were joined by players from across the country.
Second and third place were taken by Kumuran and Sash Pather, and Aldrin and Bryan Apalsamy, respectively.
