McGregors take gold in Fenn Challenge final

The McGregors held off father-and-son team Colin and Josh Simpkins, while Siyaphambili duo, Kwanele Banda and Lungelo Gumede claimed bronze.

Salt Rock paddling duo Hank and Pippa McGregor combined forces to take gold in the Fenn Challenge in Durban last Friday.

The seventh and final event of the Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series saw the husband-and-wife team outclass all other competitors.

“The conditions were pretty tame but the headwind made it quite tough on the return leg. We had to dig deep but managed to open up a gap after the first lap and just held that for the second lap to take the overall win,” said Hank.

The McGregors held off father-and-son team Colin and Josh Simpkins, while Siyaphambili duo, Kwanele Banda and Lungelo Gumede claimed bronze.

The singles division, which typically hosts the elite racers, was somewhat depleted because the event coincided with the national surf-lifesaving championships in the Eastern Cape.

This motivated Hank’s decision to take on the doubles event and it paid dividends, with Pippa in good form following a podium finish at the Dusi last month.

“I thoroughly enjoy paddling with Pippa. We have been paddling together for years and to go and do a Friday night race together starts off the weekend on a high,” he said.
